Kelly started a combination tap, ballet and gymnastics class at age 3. Her love for gymnastics was immediate. At the age of 6 she was asked to join the competition team at what is now “Bozhi’s Gymnest” in Huntington. Kelly competed until the age of 12 when her legs grew longer than her dream to be an Olympic gymnast. She then enrolled in a tumbling class to further develop her skills. At the age of 15 she was asked to teach tumbling classes at her local gym. She continued to teach until she moved away for Physical Therapy school at the age of 22.
Kelly also developed an early love for soccer, basketball and running that would follow her for years to come. In high school, she competed in sprinting distances both open and with hurdles. Her greatest accomplishment in track and field came when she won the 300 meter hurdles race at the Mountain State Athletic Conference meet. However, tibial stress fractures hindered her desire to accept a college track scholarship. In college, Kelly began running longer distances. After numerous 5Ks, and training runs for greater and greater distances to combat the stresses of school, she decided to attempt a marathon training program. She has currently completed two marathons and Disney’s “Goofy Challenge” which involves running a half marathon and a full marathon on consecutive days. Kelly has also recently begun competing in triathlons that use kayaks rather than swimming due to her lack of swimming experience. She hopes to continue for years to come. Kelly’s sports endeavors and interests have helped shape the main focus of her scope of practice in physical therapy. She enjoys treating patients with various orthopedic conditions but has a special interest in the foot and ankle and its effect on the gait cycle. Kelly performs video gait analysis on athletes of all levels who suffer from running and walking related injuries. She also performs casting and fitting of custom orthotics and fitting of over-the-counter pre-fabricated orthotics. |
