We have measured and applied OTS and custom ACL braces for more than 25 years. Mark Taylor, PT and Kevin Burton, ATC have over 50 (combined) years of experience performing these services. Their expertise helps to ensure a proper fit and proper usage of your brace. Once the brace has been measured (according to your physicians prescription), information is sent to DJO Global. Donjoy will select or fabricate your brace and ship it out. We demonstrate proper technique for the application of any brace received at HPT.Here are the 6 steps we take in fitting your ACL brace, followed by a short video:
First we identify the mid-line of the knee joint and make a small mark at the medial and lateral aspects (scope sites are used if patient is post-op).
Sit on the edge of a chair, bench, etc. and step through the brace and position the knee at about a 45* angle. Center the hinge about 1” above the landmarks (drawn or scope sites) and slightly posterior to midline of the leg/knee.
Secure bottom strap #1 then top strap #2.
Check hinge position and secure lower thigh strap #3
Now pull both condyle hinges slightly posterior and up!
After making sure of proper hinge alignment, secure the front (tibial) shin strap #4. Check hinge position one last time and secure the upper calf strap #5. Be careful not to pull the strap too tight and risk discomfort or circulation problems.
