High Blood Pressure
May is National High Blood Pressure Month. Did you know that high blood pressure (hypertension) is often termed the "The Silent Killer?" One in four people suffer from high blood pressure, but one-third of those people do not even know it. If left untreated high blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure or kidney failure. This disease can be controlled but not cured. The first step in taking control is to get your blood pressure checked. HPT offers this free service without an appointment. If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure there are steps you can take to help reduce your risk.
- Eat a diet low in fat and sodium.
- Lose weight and exercise (speak with your physician first).
- Quit smoking.
- Take your medication properly.
Contact HPT or your family physician if you have any questions or concerns.
