Successful Aging
Not only are people living longer lives, says an interesting study, but older people are enjoying more active, healthy years. The results of the MacArthur Foundation study can be found in a book called Successful Aging. The book challenges many common myths about aging. For example, the study says that being old does not have to mean being sick. Research shows that fewer elderly people are disabled by illness and the trend is expected to continue. It also says that it's never to late to learn. Older people can learn new things and learn them well.
Is successful aging a matter of genetics? Not necessarily, says the study. Although heredity can help, environment and lifestyle choices may prove more important. Another myth is that the golden years are too late to improve health habits. According to the book, however, even changes made late in life may extend life, such as quitting smoking, losing weight and getting more exercise.
