The terms "splint," "brace" and "orthosis" are oftentimes used interchangeably. A custom splint, which is made from rigid or flexible materials, can be designed to fit an individual to support a particular part of the body. Custom splints are used to increase function, prevent deformity, correct an existing deformity, protect healing structures, restrict motion, and to allow tissue growth or remodeling. A patient who has been referred to HPT for a custom splint will frequently have one of the following diagnoses:
-
Amputation
-
Burns
-
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
-
Fracture
-
Joint Contractures
-
Muscle Weakness
-
Osteoarthritis
-
Peripheral Nerve Injuries
-
Rheumatoid Arthritis
